Design of a control algorithm for charging and discharging battery of a 3 kW hybrid PCS

Abstract: In this paper, the authors present a control algorithm for charging and discharging battery of a 3 kW hybrid PCS. The control algorithm is proposed according to the battey modes. An interleaved bi-directional dc-dc converter is purposed to discharge and charge the battery with small ripple current, voltage ripple, and high-performance dynamic response. The controllers were designed for the 3 kW hybrid PCS based on the stability criteria such as phase margin and gain margin of the bode diagram. The control algorithm was then implemented in a hardware prototype and experimented for battery charging and discharging modes. The experimental results show that the system is stable and has a small overshoot. The battery voltage and current have small ripple (less than 8%). The experimental results can be applied to a commercial 3 kW PCS.
